Cemal Dayan (39) shot dead in a stairwell on Maurits Sabbehof by his former brother-in-law

Cemal Dayan (39) was shot dead on Wednesday 11 February 2015 in the stairwell of a block of flats on Maurits Sabbehof in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. The shooting took place at his sister's home. Police said immediately that the motive was to be sought within the family. Dayan was hit several times; the shot to his neck proved fatal. His 31-year-old former brother-in-law Mohammed Ali Y. was arrested as a suspect. At a preliminary hearing in December 2015 Y. stated that Dayan had threatened him with a firearm and that he had managed to take the weapon from him. Prosecutors did not believe it and demanded fourteen years in prison, above all because the prosecutor considered it proven that Y. had brought the weapon to the confrontation himself. The court took a different view. It found nothing in the file that contradicted Y.'s account that Dayan had come at him armed. The court held manslaughter proven, but ruled that it was not punishable because it had been self-defence. Y. was released before the verdict and ultimately discharged from all prosecution. The Public Prosecution Service did not appeal.
