'Oma Toni' (96) stabbed behind her walking frame on Govert Flinckstraat

Toni Heeremans-de Jong (96), known in the neighbourhood as 'oma Toni', was walking with her wheeled walking frame along Govert Flinckstraat in De Pijp at around six in the evening on Thursday 19 March 2015 — the street where she also lived. There, in broad daylight, she was stabbed several times with a knife. She is the oldest victim of murder or manslaughter Amsterdam has ever recorded. About three quarters of an hour after the stabbing the attacker reported to the police of his own accord: the 23-year-old Vino H., a man of Iraqi-Kurdish descent who had grown up in the Netherlands. He stated that he had stabbed someone at random to take revenge on his father, who he said had abused him and had thrown him out of the house at the beginning of March. His lawyer said his client had walked through Amsterdam, looked around and at some point had seen that elderly woman. Vino H. reportedly said he felt 'relieved' — not because the victim seemed likely to survive, but because he had done it, had turned himself in and would be punished. At first oma Toni recovered. Later she again suffered from a pneumonia she had contracted earlier and indicated that she no longer wished to be treated. She died on 12 April 2015. In November 2015 the court established a causal link between the stab wounds and the resulting operations on the one hand and her death on the other. The court imposed tbs with compulsory treatment, in line with the demand. On appeal that measure was upheld. In 2019 it emerged that Vino H. would have to leave the Netherlands once his treatment was complete, but that he intended to contest the deportation.
