Mario Magan Tier (45) shot dead in his car on Bertelmanstraat

Mario Magan Tier (45), son of a Spanish father and a Dutch mother and father of two children, was known in Amsterdam as 'Bolle Mario' and 'the Spaniard'. He grew up in the city, once belonged to the group around Bertelmanplein and later organised kickboxing galas through his company Real Fighters. He lived alternately in Amsterdam and in Marbella. He was well known to prosecutors: he was suspected of large-scale drug trafficking and was on trial for importing 124 kilos of cocaine through the port of Rotterdam. On the night of Saturday 7 to Sunday 8 February 2015, shortly after midnight, he was sitting in his car on Bertelmanstraat in Amsterdam-Zuid. The gunman fired straight through the side window and hit him with several bullets. Witnesses heard around eight shots. Magan Tier died at the scene. Descriptions of the gunman varied: witnesses first spoke of a man of about 1.80 metres fleeing towards Des Présstraat, while police later described a dark-skinned man. He was said to have worn a red jacket; a jacket of that colour was later found on Marathonweg. The getaway car was a dark BMW 3-series. Police described it as a contract killing. Magan Tier moved in the circles of criminals who had themselves been killed, and his name was linked to the disappearance and death of a Surinamese criminal who vanished in Spain in 2011. No one has ever been convicted of his killing.
