Jaïr Römer found dead near house after kidnapping

Jaïr Römer was held for an extended period by several people and severely abused. According to prosecutors this began on 4 January 2025 in a squatted building in Lieren, a village near Apeldoorn, where one of the suspects lived. A day later he was allegedly moved to a houseboat on the Ranonkelkade in Amsterdam-Noord, where he was again beaten and tied up. On 10 January his body was found in a stairwell at President Steynplantsoen in the Transvaalbuurt in Amsterdam-East, wrapped in a brown blanket and a tarpaulin, his wrists and ankles bound with tape and rope and his mouth taped shut. He did not survive the violence and probably died of severe head injuries. The investigation shows that Römer was already in a vulnerable position and had become involved in a conflict. Four suspects — three men and a woman — appeared at a first public pro forma hearing in Amsterdam in late April 2026, and the court kept them all in pre-trial detention. The motive, the exact crime scene and the question of who ordered the killing remain unclear. The Public Prosecution Service is offering a 15,000 euro reward for a decisive tip.
