Isilnando 'Kwaaie' Kammeron (24) shot dead near the AMC hospital

Isilnando Kammeron (24) was known in Amsterdam-Zuidoost as 'de Kwaaie' (the Angry One). He had a young son, and his girlfriend was pregnant with a daughter he would never see. His criminal record went back to the age of thirteen and included serious assaults and a 2015 conviction for attempted murder. Experts described him as intellectually limited, antisocial and aggressive. On the evening of 10 October 2016 Kammeron got into an argument with two men in a snack bar in Zuidoost. During that confrontation he stabbed one of them in the face. Adel de R. was not there; he joined the group shortly afterwards along with one other person. The wounded man needed hospital treatment. While the group — by then seven people — was on its way to the AMC hospital, they ran into Kammeron again at around half past eleven at night on Meibergdreef, where he was walking with his pregnant girlfriend. An argument broke out, after which De R. suddenly opened fire with a machine pistol. He fired five shots. Kammeron stood no chance and died in the street. De R. fled in red clothing on a mountain bike towards Holendrecht metro station. He was arrested later and eventually confessed. According to his statement he had found the weapon, a Skorpion, that summer in a plastic bag on an electrical box, and had carried it daily ever since because he felt threatened. He was found to have ADHD and anxiety disorders. In court De R. stated that he had fired because he was afraid of being stabbed himself. The court did not accept this. It called it a miracle that there were no further casualties: many bystanders were nearby, among them the victim's pregnant girlfriend. That Kammeron himself had a long criminal record changed nothing, in the court's view, about the gravity of what De R. had done. On 10 April 2018 the court sentenced Adel de R. to twelve years in prison, in line with the demand of the Public Prosecution Service. He was also ordered to pay 15,000 euros in damages to Kammeron's girlfriend. No appeal is recorded in the reporting. A second, smaller case followed. On 1 November 2019 the Amsterdam court sentenced a 21-year-old man to 120 days in prison, 56 of them conditional, for briefly having in his possession the automatic firearm with which Kammeron had just been shot dead.
