Man (35) shot dead in the entrance of the Kruitberg flat

Carlos Miquelito Bonevacia, a 35-year-old man known to family and friends as “Maiky”, was shot dead on Tuesday evening, 12 April 2016, in the entrance hall of the Kruitberg apartment block in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. He lived in the flat with his mother and was a familiar face in the neighbourhood. His roots were in Curaçao, and he had spent part of his youth in the Dominican Republic. There he had a wife and a young son, Mickey, who still lived near Santo Domingo. Maiky’s life mainly played out in the Bijlmermeer area, and he regularly visited café De Kraai. On the night of his death, he had watched a football match there. At around 23:30, his aunt called him and asked him to come home because his mother was not feeling well. Maiky left the café and walked back to the Kruitberg flat. Because he had recently had surgery on his knee, he was walking slowly on crutches. As he entered the yellow entrance hall of the flat, a man ran from across the street into the entrance behind him. Because of his crutches, Maiky had no way to escape. The gunman opened fire at close range and hit him several times. Emergency workers tried to resuscitate him, but he died at the scene from his injuries. The murder was captured on surveillance footage. The images showed that the perpetrator had probably been waiting nearby, possibly near the pillars under the metro line or around Kraaiennest metro station. After the shooting, he fled towards the arches under the metro and probably further into the neighbourhood, in the direction of the Kleiburg apartment block. Police described the suspected shooter as a dark-skinned, slim and athletic man, possibly of Surinamese, Antillean or Dominican origin, with a broad nose. He was wearing dark clothing that night, including Nike tracksuit trousers with an FC Barcelona logo and dark trainers with white soles. The motive has never become fully clear. Police considered the possibility that Maiky was involved in the drug world and may have had a conflict in that environment, but no definitive motive was established. Despite surveillance footage, witness appeals and attention on Opsporing Verzocht, as far as is known no one has been convicted for the murder of Carlos “Maiky” Bonevacia.
