Djordy Latumahina (31) shot dead in a parking garage in front of his daughter

Djordy Latumahina (31) was an Amsterdammer of Moluccan descent who originally came from Barneveld and was active in the city's nightlife. He ran Concept385, a company that developed party concepts, and regularly worked as a DJ, including at Bitterzoet. On Saturday 8 October 2016, at around half past five in the afternoon, he drove his black Mini Cooper into the parking garage of his apartment complex on Koningin Wilhelminaplein in Nieuw-West. His girlfriend was in the passenger seat and their two-year-old daughter was in the back. In the garage, fire was opened on the car. Latumahina died at the scene. His girlfriend was hit and left permanently paralysed. The girl was unharmed. In March 2017 police concluded that Latumahina had not been the intended target. It was a case of mistaken identity: the attack had been meant for the drug criminal Gino M., who lived in the same complex, parked in the same garage and also drove a black Mini Cooper. Seven men were prosecuted for involvement in the attack. In 2018 the district court sentenced Djurgen W. to 30 years, Ulrich B. to 18 years and Wendell R. to 15 years; Tony D. was acquitted. On appeal that picture shifted. On 4 February 2022 the Amsterdam court of appeal convicted Tony D. after all, as the second gunman, sentencing him to 22 years and 11 months, and raised the sentences of Wendell R. and Ulrich B. to twenty years. Djurgen W. had withdrawn his appeal, so his thirty years stood. The court spoke of an incomprehensible ruthlessness and absence of conscience, finding that a happy young family had been destroyed and that the victims had stood no chance at all. On 27 June 2023 the Supreme Court upheld the convictions. Only the sentences of Wendell R. and Ulrich B. were reduced, by three months, to 19 years and 9 months, because the proceedings had taken too long. The man who ordered the killing stayed out of reach for years afterwards. Noureddine H. was arrested in May 2021 in the Spanish coastal town of Marbella, where he had been hiding and was under surveillance by local police. On 24 June 2024 the district court in Amsterdam sentenced him to 25.5 years in prison for leading a criminal organisation and ordering the murder — less than the 29 years and 9 months the Public Prosecution Service had demanded. He was acquitted of involvement in a planned attack on the criminal Naoufal 'Noffel' F. He was ordered to pay 10,000 euros in damages to Latumahina's parents and more than 20,000 euros to his girlfriend. The mistaken-identity killing became one of the sharpest examples in Amsterdam of what the city's contract-killing violence could mean for complete outsiders: a father who drove into his own parking garage with his family in the car and was shot dead because he drove the same model as someone else.
