Anderson Munoz Marquinez (25) stabbed to death after a quarrel on Wisseloord near Gein metro

Anderson Munoz Marquinez, a 25-year-old Amsterdammer of Colombian descent, was stabbed to death on the evening of Friday 12 August 2016 on Wisseloord in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, close to the Gein shopping centre and metro station. In the neighbourhood and on YouTube he was known as a rapper under the stage name Baby Latin. He was the father of a young son. Shortly before ten in the evening Munoz Marquinez got into an argument in the street with a group of young men. The police investigation and the later trial showed that he and a seventeen-year-old boy had run into each other several times that evening. Each of those encounters involved shouting and pushing on both sides. At the last confrontation the minor drew a knife and stabbed Munoz Marquinez. A bystander immediately began resuscitation and emergency workers took over, but the injuries were too severe: Munoz Marquinez died in hospital. Those involved ran off after the stabbing; police arrested a suspect a day later, on the Saturday. Those who knew him described Munoz Marquinez as someone who loved life and loved a party, but above all as someone you could count on. “He was always there for you, even if he’d had a drink,” one friend said after his death. Friends stressed that he had nothing to do with crime — no stealing, just paying, working and going home — and that he took his role as a father seriously. He encouraged others to keep rapping and making music, and had many friends not only in Zuidoost but also in Oost. The case came to court in 2017. The defence argued self-defence, but the court did not accept it. According to the judge the boy had not been cornered at that final confrontation: his friends were nearby, at some distance, and he could and should have avoided the confrontation. Instead he stabbed. A psychologist and a psychiatrist concluded that the boy had diminished criminal responsibility as a result of earlier trauma. In July 2017 the court sentenced him to 654 days in youth detention, combined with compulsory trauma treatment and a ban on entering Zuidoost. He was also ordered to pay around 25,000 euros in damages to the family of Munoz Marquinez.
