30-year-old woman, her 5-year-old daughter and 67-year-old mother shot dead in home on Herculesstraat

During the night of Sunday 30 September to Monday 1 October 2018, four people were found dead inside a home on Herculesstraat in the Stadionbuurt neighbourhood of Amsterdam-Zuid. At around 01:00, emergency services received a report of a shooting inside the apartment. When police and ambulance staff arrived, they found a 30-year-old woman, her 5-year-old daughter, a 67-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man dead inside the home. The victims were all members of the same family. Police treated the case as a family murder: the 50-year-old man is believed to have shot his wife, his daughter and the older woman before taking his own life. In later reporting, the man and his wife were identified as Hossein Shafii Baftiy and Mina Khademizadeh; their 5-year-old daughter was named Rosha. The 67-year-old woman was the mother or mother-in-law within the family. The family came from Iran and had only been living on Herculesstraat for a short time. The neighbourhood reacted with shock; residents said they had seen the family only shortly before and could hardly comprehend what had happened. After the bodies were found, the street was closed off and forensic specialists carried out an extensive investigation in and around the home to determine exactly what had taken place. Because the suspected perpetrator also died, there was no criminal trial and no conviction.
