Eartha Mosart (45) stabbed to death in home on Raphael Lemkinstraat

Eartha Mosart, a 45-year-old woman of Surinamese origin, was stabbed in Amsterdam on Monday, 3 September 2018, by her partner Guno D., then a 47-year-old Surinamese kawina singer with whom she had been in a relationship for about seventeen years. The stabbing happened during a birthday gathering at the home of one of her cousins. Guno D. was living in Middelburg at the time and had not seen Eartha for several weeks. During the gathering, he took her phone and found messages, nude photos and videos of Eartha with another man he knew. According to his own statement, this made him completely lose control. He went to the kitchen, took a knife and returned to Eartha, who was asleep at that moment. He later said he wanted to confront her with what he had seen on her phone, but then stabbed her fourteen times. Eartha was seriously injured and taken to hospital. She died from her injuries ten days later. According to relatives, the relationship between Eartha and Guno D. was already almost over and he had assaulted her before. Eartha had also told relatives shortly before her death that she was afraid of him, because he had threatened to kill both her and himself and had allegedly said that if he could not have her, no one else would. After the stabbing, Guno D. drove around for about an hour, crying and screaming, before turning himself in to the police. During the trial, he said he could not properly explain why he had gone so far and stated that “the devil” must have entered him. The Public Prosecution Service demanded an eleven-year prison sentence for manslaughter. The court ruled that Guno D. had acted in a sudden impulse and that there was therefore no premeditated murder, but that manslaughter had been proven. On 19 December 2018, Guno D. was sentenced to eleven years in prison for stabbing Eartha Mosart to death.
